new year…newme?!
It’s that time of year again… suddenly all the fun and festivities of Christmas are over and we are whiplashed into brutal January - where we are suddenly meant to have the willpower of a saint, going for runs in the cold dark rain, stopping eating our favourite snacks and overall have a total personality transplant.
IT’S NOT FOR ME! It always seems wild to me that we are meant to be doing all these very challenging things in a season that is already challenging - it’s dark, it’s cold and we’re broke. But I’m not one of those people who completely eschew the new year and the chance for a new start. I actually love this time of year as a point to reflect on the year past, and gently begin to consider what you want your year to feel like. I personally don’t think winter is the time for big life changes. But it can be a time for making plans, getting things in place for bigger adventures, and celebrating what you’ve achieved in 2025.
I hold a goal setting party each year for my friends in Twixmas and a key part of what we always talk about is “respecting the season of life we are in”. This is absolutely integral to making realistic plans and goals for the year ahead. If you’ve got a brand new baby, your goals will not look the same as your 25 year old self - or the same as a mum with a 6 year old. There’s nothing wrong with setting aspirations for the year, as long as we are gentle with ourselves and realistic with our expectations - so we don’t set ourselves up to fail.
As a prompt, why not think about the following points?
What brought you the most joy in 2025? How can you bring more of that into 2026?
Is there one thing that you could do in each quarter (a habit, a trip etc) that moves you closer to living your values in day to day life? (Your values could be adventure, connection, health etc).
What is your overarching word of the year? Maybe it’s love, growth, connection, freedom? How do you want to feel this year?
To spark a bit of inspiration, my word of the year is “freedom” (to celebrate leaving my 9-5 job and the freedom that will bring me). I’ve planned in a winter camper van trip (aligned with my value of adventure) and I am getting stricter on my scrolling during time with my family (aligned with my value of connection).
